Songs on the Kora

Experience the rich musical traditions of West Africa with musician Sean Gaskell, who performs songs on the kora—a 21-stringed harp with a sound both delicate and powerful. The kora is traditionally played by Griots, oral historians who have preserved stories and songs for more than 800 years, tracing back to the founding of the Mande empire.
Sean studied under master kora players Moriba Kuyateh and the late Malamini Jobarteh in Brikama, Gambia, and later with Youssoupha and Mamadou Cissokho in Saly, Senegal. His performances blend history, culture, and music into an engaging experience for all ages. Having performed at more than 350 libraries, schools, and community venues across North America, Sean brings this beautiful instrument—and the stories it carries—to life.
