Recovery
Photographs by Elliot Burg
On display in the Kitzmiller Fiction Room through August
Shortly after the flood in July of last year, my wife August and I joined hundreds of volunteers to help local businesses in Montpelier clean out drenched basements and sort through water-soaked merchandise. The scene was both grim, in the scale of the destruction, and inspirational, in the number and spirit of the people who showed up to work. The following day, I brought my cameras to town, and, mud-stained (like every other volunteer) from another morning of work downtown, I went out on the street to capture scenes of resilience and recovery, some of which are on display here.
Artist Background
I am a freelance photographer from Middlesex focusing on candid portraiture conveying the beauty, diversity and emotions of people at home and abroad as they go about living their lives. My solo shows have included Transcending the Limits of Age (portraits of track and field athletes at the National Senior Games); The Combination (boxer Ali Watson in training and in the ring); Eli’s Town (seeking family roots amidst kindness and brutality in Eastern Europe); Conga! (exuberant images of Havana, Cuba); Tunbridge Fair (scenes from Vermont’s iconic autumn event); and Trelew—Reflections on a Massacre (witnessing the 50th anniversary of the Argentinian military’s infamous Trelew Massacre). I can be reached at [email protected], and my work can be viewed at elliotburgphoto.com.
