New Works Exploring the Beauty of Vermont

This body of work explores the emotional and physical facets of “place,” drawing inspiration from a deep connection to Vermont and a love for tactile materials and color. The monotypes featured here are a recent exploration into painterly prints, allowing for fresh approaches to layering and color. They are made by painting a gel plate and pulling the image off of the plate with paper.

Julie is a dedicated Artist and Educator who has been creating art since childhood. Her professional work is uniquely shaped by the symbiotic relationship between her practice as an artist and her role as an educator.

A note from the artist:

Engaging in the process, the mystery, is a practice of expansiveness for me.

I make art because we live in an unsolvable, ineffable world. We come up against so many things in life that are mysterious or puzzling and we have no control. That’s why I push the paint around and see what happens.
The paintings tap into many notions of place — both physical and emotional. My love of color, nature and tactile materials is combined with an openness to the unfolding that happens while working. I’ve recently begun to think of my paintings as in-the-moment gestures — a physical, visceral language that addresses the knowing and not knowing nature of humanity.
The paintings create openings through landscape references, curiosity through text, and opportunity for exploring meaning through layers of visual information. I am intrigued by how people experience life and art:  what they bring to a painting, and what they take away from the experience.
