Each session, held on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:00 PM, will explore significant rulings and their implications. These discussions are accessible to all via Zoom, and recordings will be available on our webpage 7-10 days after the event for those who are unable to attend live. Join us for an insightful presentation featuring Attorney Rod Smolla, President of Vermont Law School, hosted by the League of Women Voters in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Smolla will examine the recent Supreme Court decision granting near-total legal immunity to the President of the United States for actions taken in official capacity, while also addressing the potential for former presidents to face prosecution for unofficial acts committed while in office.

Bridget Asay is an experienced trial and appellate lawyer, who served as the Solicitor General for Vermont. She has argued dozens of appeals in state and federal courts throughout the country, including twice before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Delcianna J. Winders is an associate professor of law and Director of the Animal Law and Policy Institute at VLGS. Professor Winders previously taught at Lewis & Clark Law School, where she directed the world’s first law school clinic dedicated to farmed animals

League of Women Voters 2024-25 Lecture Series: Carson v. Makin

Public Funds for Religious Schools

Join us for a discussion on the June 2022 Supreme Court decision that ruled Maine’s “nonsectarian” requirement for tuition assistance payments violates the Free Exercise Clause, mandating public funding for religious schools.

Harrison Stark, Senior Staff Attorney at the Vermont ACLU, will provide insight into the case, drawing from his extensive experience in civil rights and constitutional law.

Also joining the conversation is Rebecca Holcombe, former Secretary of Education and current Vermont state representative, who will offer her perspective on the implications for education policy.
