Construction will begin Wednesday, May 22nd on our new elevator and elevator machine room. Work will take place at the 1st floor landing of the School Street stairwell and in the Community Corner of the Non-Fiction Room (by the water fountain). While our contractor will make every effort to minimize disruption during Library hours, you can expect some construction noise and potential temporary detours. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Our elevator equipment was severely damaged during the flooding in Montpelier in July 2023. We believe that a safe, welcome, and accessible space is essential for everyone. That’s why we have been working tirelessly with architects, engineers, and contractors to restore our elevator as quickly as possible. Due to supply chain and labor issues, and the need to move our elevator equipment out of the basement to meet current code (and to future-proof against future flooding), this work has taken time; more time than we wished. We are grateful that construction is finally underway and will be thrilled to have a working elevator again in the next several months.

8/15/24 update: After a significant delay, Alpha Elevator is finally on site today and has begun installing the elevator machinery. They are still waiting on some cab parts, but we are happy to finally have them here working. They will be here 2-3 days a week for several weeks/months. We will likely use the entrance to the Hayes Room via the non-fiction room during this time, and there may be occasional disruptions to the School Street Entrance as heavy machinery is brought inside.

In the meantime, we are committed to providing accommodations to anyone who isn’t able to access to the building. Please call us at 802-223-3338 or email us at [email protected] to discuss how we can help.
