SUMMARY:Songs on the Kora
DESCRIPTION:Experience the rich musical traditions of West Africa with musician Sean Gaskell\, who performs songs on the kora—a 21-stringed harp with a sound both delicate and powerful. The kora is traditionally played by Griots\, oral historians who have preserved stories and songs for more than 800 years\, tracing back to the founding of the Mande empire. \nSean studied under master kora players Moriba Kuyateh and the late Malamini Jobarteh in Brikama\, Gambia\, and later with Youssoupha and Mamadou Cissokho in Saly\, Senegal. His performances blend history\, culture\, and music into an engaging experience for all ages. Having performed at more than 350 libraries\, schools\, and community venues across North America\, Sean brings this beautiful instrument—and the stories it carries—to life.

SUMMARY:Death Cafe
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an open\, thoughtful\, and supportive conversation about one of life’s biggest realities. The Death Café is a free community gathering with no set agenda—just a chance to share questions\, stories\, concerns\, and hopes about death\, dying\, and planning for the future. \nIn today’s world\, these conversations are often avoided\, yet they touch every part of life: our bodies\, belongings\, legal matters\, funerals\, burials\, and the memories we leave behind. SUMMARY:League of Women Voters: What is Birthright Citizenship? - Online Only
DESCRIPTION:Series Introduction\nFor nine years\, the League of Women Voters of Vermont\, in partnership with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library\, has presented a monthly series of programs designed to inform and engage the public on issues of civic importance. This year\, the series turns its attention to voting rights and access to the ballot—a cornerstone of democracy that continues to evolve amid social\, legal\, and political challenges. Join us each month as we explore key questions and legislation shaping the American voting landscape. \nNovember 12:  What is Birthright Citizenship?\nThe series opens with a talk on birthright citizenship\, one of the most fundamental yet often misunderstood elements of American democracy. What does it mean to be granted citizenship by birth? How has this principle been interpreted\, challenged\, and defended over time? This program will examine the historical roots of the 14th Amendment\, explore current debates surrounding citizenship\, and consider what proposed changes could mean for the future of civil rights in the United States. \nAbout the Speaker: \nJulio A. Thompson is an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Vermont and Co-Director of the Attorney General’s Civil Rights Unit\, which enforces Vermont’s laws regarding employment discrimination\, fair employment practices\, and hate crimes.  In that role\, Julio also represents the State of Vermont in national civil rights litigation and testifies regularly before the Vermont Legislature on issues relating to employment law and civil rights.  Julio spent his first 15 years of practice in Los Angeles— first as a judicial law clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and later as partner in a downtown L.A. law firm\, where he specialized in labor\, employment\, and civil rights law.  \nWatch the recording here.\nFuture Talks:\nDecember 10: History of the Voting Rights ActExplore the origins and impact of the Voting Rights Act\, the landmark legislation that shaped access to the ballot in the United States. \nJanuary 14: Voter Suppression MethodsExamine the tactics and policies that have been used to restrict voting access and their effects on communities across the country. \nFebruary 11: GerrymanderingLearn how the drawing of electoral district boundaries can influence political power and affect representation. \nMarch 11: John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the SAVE ActDiscuss recent federal proposals aimed at protecting voting rights and combating discriminatory practices at the ballot box\, as well as new rules that would restrict access to voter registration.

SUMMARY:Daytime Dungeons & Dragons
DESCRIPTION:Step into a world of imagination this November and December with Daytime Dungeons & Dragons! Join Game Master Mark Pitton for a six-week daytime campaign filled with creativity\, laughter\, and adventure. Whether you’re new to the game or have been rolling dice for years\, you’re welcome to pull up a chair and join the story. No sign-up required—just show up and see where the adventure takes you. \nDungeons & Dragons (D&D) is a storytelling game where imagination\, problem-solving\, and collaboration take center stage. If you enjoy puzzles\, humor\, meeting others\, or diving into shared stories\, you’ll find plenty to love here. As Mark says\, “It’s a lot of fun—and that’s maybe the best reason to play.” \nYour Dungeon Master\, Mark\, has been playing since 1979 and has seen every edition come and go. He delights in crafting worlds\, encounters\, and storylines that let players experience everything that makes D&D special—jokes and clever references included. No experience is needed: you don’t need to know the rules\, use character voices\, or buy anything. The library provides the space\, and Mark provides the adventure. \nThe campaign runs for six sessions\, about two hours each. The first meeting introduces the basics and lets everyone try out the game. In the following sessions\, players create their own adventurers and set off to explore a world full of shopkeepers\, thieves\, crypts\, and creatures both friendly and fearsome. The game uses the newest 5.5 (2024) edition of D&D\, so experienced players will also have something fresh to enjoy. \nCome for the fun\, stay for the story—and discover why Dungeons & Dragons has inspired millions of players\, dozens of novels\, a TV cartoon\, four movies\, and even family traditions passed down through generations. \nQuestions? Contact Mark Pitton at markrpitton@gmail.com.

The Café offers a safe and welcoming space to talk\, listen\, and connect with others on this journey. Many find that facing death openly with loved ones can lift a burden and make life feel even more vibrant and full. \nTea and baked goods are always served.
